This is particularly true with younger patients learning about taking care of their mouths for the first time.

In the spirit of that, here are five simple facts to remember about your teeth. (And dental care in general.)

1) 90% of diseases have oral symptoms.

2) Tooth decay is the second most common disease in the United States.

3) Approximately $2B is spent on dental products per year. (The most under-purchased category? Floss…don’t neglect flossing. See point #5.)

4) Teeth are the hardest substance in the human body.

5) If you neglect to floss, you’re missing 35% of the tooth surface in your mouth.

Number two is actually the one that most surprises adults. (P.S. Don’t forget to floss.)

Toothbrush That Feeds You Caffeine?

caffeine toothbrushAccording to Gawker, Colgate-Palmolive has filed a patent for a toothbrush technology that can feed your mouth a stream of chemicals as you brush, including caffeine, appetite suppressants, and pain-killers.

The concept went from “interesting” with caffeine directly to “wide open to be abused” with the latter two items.

I know a multitude of people that enter our Pleasanton dentist office love their caffeine, but I also think they enjoy their coffee. I’m not sure the “toothbrush release method” is something they’d be interested in.

To be fair, the patent also notes that the technology can be used for simple things like additional flavor enhancements, but I’m just not sure I see the application when it comes to administering drugs.

It will be interesting to see how (or if) this develops. It could just be a piece of research and development that never finds its way to market in any form as described above.
